Description

The picturesque little village of Verteuil, situated on the banks of the Charente River, is dominated by the Château de La Rochefoucauld, built in the 11th century. The castle was taken by the troops of the Black Prince in 1361, and after several battles, it was definitively retaken with the help of King Charles VII's troops in 1442. It was partially rebuilt in the 16th century. The château has hosted many crowned heads, including François I, Henri II, Henri III, Henri IV, and Louis XIII. Emperor Charles V was received there in 1539 and planted a yew tree that is still greatly admired today. François VI de La Rochefoucauld, the author of "Maxims," wrote his memoirs there. The château remains in the possession of a member of the La Rochefoucauld family.
