Renault is one of the oldest Cognac houses, founded in 1835 by the ambitious 25-year-old Jean Antonin Renault in the town of Cognac. A true pioneer, he was among the first to export cognac in bottles rather than barrels, starting in the 1850s—ensuring better preservation and global brand recognition.
In 1876, he registered the Carte Noire trademark, a blend still produced today. Renault Carte Noire is a blend of Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, and Fins Bois eaux-de-vie, with an average age of 12 to 13 years.
In 1963, Renault acquired Castillon and became Castillon-Renault. Between 1968 and 1991, the brand changed ownership several times before being acquired by Pernod Ricard in 1991, becoming a subsidiary of Bisquit: Renault-Bisquit.
In 2010, the Finnish company Altia took over the Renault brand. For a few years, production focused only on Carte Noire and Carte d’Argent, but the range has since expanded once again.
As early as the 1870s, Renault adopted its emblem of a lion rising from a crown—still in use today. This symbol was inspired by the heraldic arms of Jean Antonin Renault’s in-laws, the Trigant du Petit Fort family.
Renault Carte Noire offers refined aromas of dried fruits, fine wood, and vanilla. On the palate, it is smooth and round, with flavors of roasted hazelnuts, honey, and candied fruits. The finish is long and balanced, making it a characterful cognac to savor slowly.
Presented in an elegant bottle, Renault Carte Noire remains a historic expression of the house’s commitment to tradition, quality, and timeless craftsmanship.
